A Signed Statement of Accuracy

A certified translation is a translated document accompanied by a signed statement affirming its completeness and accuracy.

The Translator Doesn't Need to Be Certified

Legally, that's true — anyone can sign a statement of accuracy. But when you hire a ATIU-certified translator, you're also getting someone who has passed a proctored exam, is bound by our code of ethics, and can be held accountable through ATIU if something goes wrong. That's the difference clients are actually paying for.

What's Included in a Certified Translation

A certified translation from ATIU is more than just the translated text. Every certified translation includes:

  • The complete translated document
  • A signed statement of accuracy from the translator
  • The translator's name and contact information, for verification
  • Notarization, if requested and required by the receiving institution

When Do You Need a Certified Translation?

Institutions that require a "certified" translation generally mean the signed statement of accuracy described above. Common situations include:

  • Immigration and visa applications
  • Court and legal proceedings
  • University and school admissions
  • Government or official paperwork

Certified vs. Notarized: Not the Same Thing

These two terms are often confused, and some institutions require both.

Certified

A statement from the translator vouching for the completeness and accuracy of the translation.

Notarized

A separate step where a notary public verifies the translator's identity and signature — it says nothing about the accuracy of the translation itself.

Not sure which one you need? Check directly with the institution requesting the document.
